Kiawah Island
The Ocean Course, and a whole resort island built around it.
Kiawah is five golf courses on one barrier island, headlined by the Ocean Course — host of the 1991 "War by the Shore" Ryder Cup and two PGA Championships. There's no real downtown on the island itself, so the eating and drinking happens just outside the gate at Freshfields Village, or a few minutes further at Johns Island, which has quietly turned into one of the Lowcountry's better food scenes.

Charleston International (CHS) is about 25-30 minutes from the island. Spring and fall are the sweet spot — summer brings serious humidity and the edge of hurricane season, and you'll pay resort-peak prices for the privilege either way.
