Kohler is a company town — literally built by the bathroom-fixtures brand — that happens to host some of the most decorated modern golf in America, right on Lake Michigan. It's polished where you'd expect (this is a luxury resort destination), but five minutes down the road in Sheboygan you're back in true Wisconsin supper-club and brandy-old-fashioned territory. Bring both wardrobes.

Milwaukee Mitchell International (MKE) is about an hour south; Appleton (ATW) and Green Bay are closer but smaller. May through October is the season — this is a Lake Michigan winter otherwise, and the Straits close along with everything else.
